Nebula Awards nominees 2013

Sono stati resi noti i candidati al prestigioso Premio Nebula, riconoscimento assegnato  dalla Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA) alle migliori storie e pellicole cinematografiche di fantascienza rilasciate negli Stati Uniti durante l'anno precedente la premiazione.

La particolarità di questo premio – che in passato ha visto il trionfo di autori molto noti ai cultori del genere, come Isaac Asimov, Neil Gaiman e Connie Willis – è l’assegnazione di un blocco trasparente  nel quale è presente una nebulosa a spirale, piuttosto che un riconoscimento di tipo economico. I Nebula Awards premiano quattro differenti categorie, distinte in base alla lunghezza dell'opera per numero di parole:

·         Miglior romanzo (Best Novel): opere di lunghezza superiore alle 40.000 parole;

·         Miglior romanzo breve (Best Novella): opere di lunghezza tra le 17.500 e le 40.000 parole;

·         Miglior racconto (Best Novellette): opere di lunghezza tra le 7.500 e 17.500 parole;

·         Miglior racconto breve (Best Short Story): opere di lunghezza inferiore alle 7.500 parole.

Inoltre, a partire dall’anno 2000, a queste quattro categorie è stata aggiunta quella relativa alla miglior sceneggiatura cinematografica, per la quale i vincitori più noti sono stati Peter Jackson con la Trilogia dell’anello, Joss Whedon con Serenity e la Pixar col meraviglioso film d’animazione WALL-E.

Molti sono i candidati di quest’anno, dunque ci limiteremo a presentarvi una panoramica dei romanzi in lizza per la prima categoria.

The prestigious Nebula Awards nominees 2013 were announced a few days ago. The awards are organized and awarded by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA), a nonprofit association of professional science fiction and fantasy writers, and are given to the best science fiction stories and films released in the United States during the previous year.

The particularity of this prize - which in the past has seen the triumph of well-known authors such as Isaac Asimov, Neil Gaiman and Connie Willis - is the assignment of a transparent block in which there is a spiral nebula, rather than a money prize.

The Nebula Awards recognize four different categories, according to the length of the:

• Best Novel: stories of 40,000 words or more;

• Best Novella: stories of between 17,500 and 40,000 words;

• Best Novellette: stories of between 7,500 and 17,500 words;

• Best Short Story: stories of less than 7,500 words.

Since 2000, the Best Script Award has been added to these categories, for which the best known winners were Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, Joss Whedon’s Serenity and Pixar’s wonderful animation movie WALL-E.

This year there are many candidates, so we are going to give only an overview of the novels running in the first category.

Throne of the Crescent Moon – Saladin Ahmed

Quando scoprono che gli omicidi e l’ascesa del Principe Falco sono correlati, i compagni si troveranno a dover correre contro il tempo, lottare contro i propri dubbi, per salvare la vita di un despota feroce. Così facendo scopriranno un complotto per il trono della Luna Crescente che minaccia di trasformare Dhamsawaat e il mondo stesso, in un luogo distrutto e intriso di sangue.

In so doing they discover a plot for the Throne of the Crescent Moon that threatens to turn Dhamsawaat, and the world itself, into a blood-soaked ruin.

Oltre ai Premi Nebula, durante il weekend dal 16 al 19 maggio, saranno assegnati anche il Premio Ray Bradbury per i Migliori Spettacoli Cinematografici, i Premi Saturn (con categorie simili a quelle degli Oscar) e il Premio Andre Norton per la miglior Fantascienza e Fantasy per Giovani Adulti, che vedono tra gli altri candidati il primo volume della serie The Diviners (in Italia pubblicato con il titolo La stella nera di New York) di Libba Bray. Ma vediamo insieme anche alcuni degli altri titoli nominati al riconoscimento, tra cui anche Black Heath di Holly Black, autrice de Spiderwick, Le cronache, e Seraphina: La Ragazza con il Cuore di Drago di Rachel Hartman, edito in Italia per Sperling & Kupfer.

During the weekend May 16 to 19, the Ray Bradbury Award, the Saturn Awards (with categories similar to those of the Oscars) and the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy will be delivered. About this latter, among other nominees there’s the first volume of the Libba Bray series The Diviners. Let’s see some of the other titles nominated for the award, including author of The Spiderwick Chronicles Holly Black’s Black Heart, , and Rachel Hartman’s Seraphina, published in Italy by Sperling & Kupfer.

Black Heart – Holly Black
